Day 1 at work

First day at work! Bit of a disorganized day but I got a quick tour around, saw the menu and a break down of all the items. The other apprentice and I got to make ravioli dough and fill it with a smoked fish filling. After that we cleaned up our zone and proceeded to check the dates and quality of the food in the walk in and reach in fridges. Sadly throwing out a large amount of expired and food that had gone off.

Day 7

Today we cooked potatoes, it's been a very starchy first 2 weeks. Potatoes with a bit of heavy cream and milk binding together to create something like mashed potatoes. Mixed in with some steamed carrots, celery root and leaks. Very tasty! After this more math and we received the results of our first quiz. I scored under 50% but had about one full lecture before we had the exam. The exam was on work ethics and what rights we as apprentices have. Frau Billings teaches both. After this it was a lesson in nutrition which is proving to be my most difficult subject so far. He has us do a lot of paperwork, and a lot of the words are new to me but it is interesting and he did say he would not be giving us homework ever which is nice. Sometimes it seems the teachers are as glad to get out of there as the students, we all thought we had Herr Billings for 4hours and I think to his relief and ours we found out it was only 2.

Day 6

Pretty easy day today lots of mathematical equations. I have to remember all of this from around 15 years back, and I'm still not sure it will ever be relevant outside of the classroom. But it's fun and interesting all the same. Then on to some baking we made some Plätzchen little cookies in German. My group was a bit ridiculous, I'm getting the perfectionist and the guy that does not give a fuck. All we gotta do is read and go slowly and make sure we follow the recipe but no, let's go slap it all together boom boom! And naturally the cookies were not entirely proper, the egg white needs to be whipped super fast and for a short time. Not long on low.

Day 5

Starting the day with an exam is never nice, I reckon I'll need to improve my German skills a fair bit as half the words I did not understand and had to figure out through context. We are Relearning all the mass and volume formula's at the moment, how many kilograms to a liter and things of that Nature. The teacher of that class is retiring and it looks as if we'll have a new one at the end of the year. In cooking class we made potatoes au gratin, little fried cubed potatoes and another type that need to be trimmed small and shaved on the sides all in one motion. I'll need to practice that manuveur as well. After being criticized multiple times by the teacher. Week one down!

Day 4

Today we had our homeroom teacher for most of the day, going over the rights and regulations in regards to apprentices. As well as going to a new class were we began talking about cell bonds. Depending on age there are naturally different working restrictions. Going on we had sport for about an hour and a half playing a full court game of basketball. After that is was back to homeroom for the rest of the day to study up on rules and regulations regarding underage and of age apprentices.

Day 2

Oiiiii! This is the earliest I've ever had to wake up for school before. 5.45am is an ungodly hour. The classes are fun, it's nice to practice German more frequently and we cooked pomme frites today. Wirksshaft Politiks is interesting I'm learning all my rights as an apprentice here in Germany.

The journey begins

Finally after 5 months of bureocratic battles the first day of my apprenticeship has begun the 6th of December! 7.40 in the morning began the first lesson. After a bit of a piss take of how I say my name we started cooking rüstis. Similar to a Latke or hash browns. I never thought to use the towel to drain out the excess water from the grated potatoes. After the first lesson it was on to wirksshaft Politik I'll have to work on my reading and writing skills as this class seems a bit difficult. After that it was on to baking where we made "American Style chocolate chip cookies" then back to work to have a staff meeting discussing problems and greivances in the workplace.
